On 6 and 7 November 2024, the Office of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia for Information Security organised a workshop on New Technologies in Cybersecurity at the Western Balkans Cyber Capacity Centre in Podgorica, Montenegro, which highlighted the challenges of quantum computing and artificial intelligence.

The Slovenian workshop for cybersecurity experts from the Western Balkan countries focused on the latest developments in cybersecurity, with a particular focus on emerging technologies and their contribution to improving digital security in the Western Balkans.

Main topics included quantum cryptography and artificial intelligence. Mitja Trampuž and Dr Nastja Cepak from CREAPLUS gave a detailed presentation on quantum technologies, explaining the differences between post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and quantum key distribution (QKD) and the timelines for regulatory standardisation of these technologies.

The workshop also featured presentations by quantum computing and artificial intelligence scientists from the Jožef Stefan Institute, the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Ljubljana, and Beyond Semiconductor.

In addition to technical expertise, the event also highlighted the value of a coordinated regional response to cyber threats and the need for further support and training to strengthen cyber security resilience in the region.
